In empty hills no man is seen,
But human voices ring unseen.
Deep woods reflect the setting sun,
On mossy ground its beams still run.
The opening line uses 'empty hills' to evoke solitude, but the paradox of 'no man seen' yet voices heard sets up the aural-visual contrast.
'But human voices ring' deepens the sense of stillness through sound, a classic technique of using motion to accentuate stillness.
'Returning sunlight' means the glow of sunset entering the deep woods, shifting from hearing to vision, weaving color and light.
The final close-up on moss, usually damp and dark, now illuminated by fleeting sunlight, contrasts ephemeral light with eternal stillness.
This poem was written during Wang Wei's later years of seclusion in the Wangchuan Valley. It is the fifth of twenty poems in the 'Wangchuan Collection.' A devoted Chan Buddhist, Wang Wei infused his verses with ethereal simplicity, using natural scenes to convey stillness and impermanence.
