"The Black-Robe Lane" is the second of Liu Yuxi's "Five Poems on Jinling", written between 826 and 828 AD during the Tang Dynasty. After being demoted for participating in the Yongzhen Reform, Liu passed through Jinling (modern-day Nanjing) on his way back to Luoyang. Moved by the ruins of the ancient capital, he reflected on the rise and fall of the Six Dynasties. The Black-Robe Lane, once home to aristocratic clans of Eastern Jin, had become an ordinary neighborhood in Tang times. Using the image of swallows, the poet expresses his meditation on historical vicissitudes and the transience of human glory.
