The first line depicts a grand distant view: the Yellow River seems to ascend toward the white clouds. Hyperbole and imagination emphasize the vastness and desolation of the frontier.
The second line contrasts 'a lonely fort' with 'cliffs ten thousand feet high', highlighting the fort's isolation amid towering mountains, evoking loneliness and harshness of the border.
The Qiang flute plays the tune 'Breaking Willow Branches', a melody of farewell or homesickness. The poet uses 'why complain' as a consolation, yet deepens the sorrow, hinting at soldiers' longing for home.
The last line has double meaning: literally, the spring wind never reaches the Jade Gate Pass; figuratively, it implies the imperial favor cannot reach the remote frontier. Subtle irony with profound implications.
'Liangzhou Song' is a masterpiece of frontier poetry by Wang Zhihuan, composed during the High Tang period. At that time, conflicts between the Tang and ethnic groups like Tubo were frequent along the northwestern border. Through frontier scenes, the poet expresses the soldiers' loneliness and homesickness, while subtly criticizing the court's negligence toward the border troops.
