Upon the Clear-and-Bright Day, rain falls in spray;
Pedestrians on the way, their hearts are in dismay.
I ask a shepherd boy: 'Where is a tavern to drink?'
He points to Apricot Village, far but in a wink.
The first line sets the season and weather. 'Qingming' refers to the festival but also implies 'clear and bright'; 'fall in spray' (fenfen) depicts both the dense rain and the travelers' disturbed mood.
The phrase 'hearts are in dismay' (yu duan hun) vividly conveys the extreme sorrow of travelers, as if their souls are breaking, emphasizing the grief of memorial rites or homesickness.
The polite inquiry 'I ask' (jie wen) reveals the traveler's urgent desire to drown sorrows in wine, creating suspense for the next line.
The shepherd boy's gesture 'points to afar' (yao zhi) is vivid and indirect; 'Apricot Village' is both a real place and a poetic symbol of the tavern, evoking a pastoral and hopeful image.
