A morning rain has cleaned the light dust in Weicheng

The willows near the hotel look so fresh and green

I invite you to drink a cup of wine again

West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen

The morning rain in Weicheng moistens the light dust, the word 'moistens' delicately depicts the gentle wetting, creating a fresh yet slightly melancholy atmosphere for the farewell.

The green roof of the inn contrasts with the fresh green of willows; 'willows' homophonically suggests 'stay' (liu) in Chinese, hinting at the reluctance to part, while the fresh green symbolizes hope and vitality, contrasting the sorrow of separation.

The poet urges his friend to finish one more cup of wine; this simple act of persuasion is filled with deep friendship, a final warm care for the friend about to travel far.

West of the Yang Pass, there will be no old friends; this line directly expresses the sadness and loneliness of parting, leaving a lingering aftertaste.

This poem was composed by Wang Wei when seeing off his friend Yuan Er, who was dispatched on a mission to the Anxi Protectorate (in present-day Xinjiang). The journey to the Western Regions was long and arduous; through an ordinary farewell scene, the poet conveys profound regret at parting. Later, set to a plaintive tune, it became the famous song 'Three Variations of the Yang Pass'.
