送杜少府之任蜀州
城阙辅三秦，
风烟望五津。
与君离别意，
同是宦游人。
海内存知己，
天涯若比邻。
无为在歧路，
儿女共沾巾。
The capital walls shield the Three Qin lands;
Through mist and smoke, five ferries stand.
Why do I feel this parting ache?
We both are roamers for fortune's sake.
If there are friends within the four seas,
The distant heavens seem as neighbor's pleas.
Do not, at the parting crossroads, shed
Tears like a child as if love were dead.
逐句注释
城阙辅三秦，
城阙：指长安城。辅：护卫。三秦：泛指关中地区。此句写长安的雄伟，以三秦为屏障。
City gates and towers: referring to Chang'an. 'Auxiliary' means to shield. 'Three Qin' refers to the Guanzhong region. The line describes Chang'an's grandeur, guarded by the Three Qin lands.
风烟望五津。
风烟：风尘烟雾。五津：指蜀中五个渡口。诗人遥望远方，想象朋友将经过的岷江渡口。
Wind and smoke: mist and dust. 'Five ferries' are the five ferry crossings in Shu. The poet gazes into the distance, imagining the ferries his friend will pass.
与君离别意，
君：指杜少府。离别意：离别的情意。诗人直抒胸臆，表达离愁。
'You' refers to Du Shaofu. 'Parting feeling' is the emotion of farewell. The poet expresses his sorrow directly.
同是宦游人。
宦游人：在外做官或漂泊的人。诗人与友人同为仕途奔波之人，因此更能理解彼此的离愁。
'Roaming officials' means people who travel for government posts. Both poet and friend are wanderers in officialdom, thus they deeply understand each other's sorrow of separation.
海内存知己，
海内：四海之内，全国。知己：知心朋友。此句化用曹植《赠白马王彪》“丈夫志四海，万里犹比邻”，传达出超越空间的友情。
'Within the four seas' means within the country. 'Knowing friend' refers to a bosom companion. This line borrows from Cao Zhi's poem, conveying that true friendship transcends distance.
天涯若比邻。
天涯：天边，极远之地。比邻：近邻。即使相隔万里，也如同邻居一样亲近。此句豪迈旷达，是全诗警句。
'End of the sky' means the farthest place. 'Neighbor' means close neighbor. Even if separated by vast distances, they are as close as next-door neighbors. This line is heroic and broad-minded, a famous maxim.
无为在歧路，
无为：不要。歧路：分岔路口，指分别处。劝慰友人不要悲伤。
'Do not' means don't. 'Crossroads' refers to the parting place. The poet comforts his friend not to be sad.
儿女共沾巾。
儿女：像青年男女一样。沾巾：泪水沾湿手巾。意思是不要像小儿女那样哭哭啼啼。
'Children' means like young boys and girls. 'Wet handkerchiefs' means tears wetting the cloth. Meaning: don't weep like a child.
