A quiet place, few neighbors near,
A grassy path leads to a wild garden.
Birds roost on trees by the pool clear,
A monk knocks at the moonlit gate.
Crossing the bridge divides the scenery fair,
Moving stones stirs the cloud roots' state.
I'll leave but come again to share,
The hermit's vow I won't abate.
First line describes the hermitage's setting: secluded with few neighbors. 'Leisure dwelling' hints at reclusive life, 'few neighbors' stresses remoteness.
A grassy path leads into an overgrown garden, creating a quiet, desolate atmosphere. 'Grassy path' and 'wild garden' echo, suggesting neglect.
Birds roosting in trees by the pool indicates dusk, a peaceful scene. The word 'roost' conveys stillness within motion.
The poet, as a monk, knocks under moonlight; the sound breaks the silence. This line is famous for the 'push vs. knock' anecdote; 'knock' is more audible and refined than 'push'.
Crossing the bridge, the scenery divides, implying different views on either side. The verb 'divides' animates the static landscape.
Moving stones seems to stir the roots of clouds—a hyperbole linking rocks and mist, imaginative. 'Cloud roots' refers to where clouds rise in deep mountains.
The poet leaves temporarily but vows to return, expressing attachment to the hermitage and intent to retire.
I won't break the hermit's vow—keeping the promise of reclusion. 'Hermit's vow' refers to the pledge of seclusion; the final line reinforces commitment and aspiration.

Jia Dao visited his friend Li Ning but missed him; inspired by the serene hermitage, he wrote this poem. The line 'a monk knocks at the moonlit gate' is famous for the poet's deliberation between 'push' and 'knock'—a literary legend. Through images of wild garden, poolside trees, and moonlit gate, the poem portrays the tranquility of reclusive life and the poet's longing for seclusion.
