夏日南亭怀辛大

山光忽西落

山光指山间的日光、夕照。忽西落写夕阳忽然西沉，突出夏夜降临之快，也带有诗人对时光流逝的主观感受。

Mountain light means the sunlight or evening glow on the hills. Suddenly sinking to the west stresses how quickly the summer night falls and conveys the poet's subjective sense of time passing.

池月渐东上

池月指倒映在池水上的月亮。渐东上写月亮缓缓东升，与上句忽字形成急与缓的对照，写出由黄昏入夜的动态过程。

The pond moon is the moon reflected in the pond. Gradually climbing in the east contrasts with the suddenness of the previous line, depicting the gradual shift from dusk to night.

散发乘夕凉

散发指散开头发，不拘礼法，表现闲适自在。乘夕凉即趁着傍晚清凉纳凉，写出诗人夏夜放松身心、亲近自然的情态。

With hair unbound suggests freedom from formal restraint and a relaxed, unconventional posture. Enjoying the evening cool shows the poet refreshing himself on a summer night and drawing close to nature.

开轩卧闲敞

轩指窗或带窗的长廊。开轩卧闲敞写打开窗户，闲卧在宽敞清幽之处，进一步表现夏夜纳凉的舒适与心境的开朗闲适。

Xuan means a window or a windowed gallery. Opening the window and lying at ease in a spacious, quiet place further expresses the comfort of cooling off on a summer night and a relaxed, open state of mind.

荷风送香气

荷风指吹过荷花的微风。送香气从嗅觉写夏夜清风，荷叶荷花香气随风而来，使画面清润幽雅，富有感官之美。

Lotus breeze means the wind passing over lotus blossoms. Sending fragrance uses the sense of smell to portray the summer night breeze; the scent arrives with the wind, making the scene fresh, elegant, and richly sensory.

竹露滴清响

竹露指竹叶上的露水。滴清响从听觉写露珠滴落之声，以细微清响反衬夏夜的幽静，体现以动衬静、以声写静的手法。

Bamboo dew is dew on bamboo leaves. Dripping with a clear sound uses hearing to describe dew falling; the tiny sound sets off the stillness of the summer night, illustrating the technique of using motion and sound to reveal quiet.

欲取鸣琴弹

鸣琴指弹奏琴瑟。诗人因夜景清幽而想弹琴抒怀，琴在古代常象征高洁情志与知音相赏，此句为下文怀念知音作铺垫。

Ming qin means playing the lute. Moved by the serene night, the poet wishes to play and express his feelings. In ancient poetry the lute often symbolizes noble sentiment and the hope of being understood, preparing for the longing for a kindred spirit below.

恨无知音赏

恨在这里是遗憾、怅惘，不是仇恨。知音用伯牙与钟子期的典故，指真正理解自己琴声与心境的人。此句写诗人虽有雅兴，却无人共赏的孤独。

Hen here means regret or melancholy, not hatred. Zhiyin alludes to Boya and Zhong Ziqi, meaning one who truly understands another's music and heart. The line expresses the poet's loneliness: he has elegant inspiration but no one to share it.

感此怀故人

感此即因眼前清景与无知音之感而触动情怀。故人指旧友辛大。此句由景入情，从夏夜纳凉转入对友人的深切怀念。

Moved by this means being stirred by the clear scene and the feeling of having no kindred spirit. Old friend refers to Xin Da. The line turns from scenery to emotion, shifting from summer-night coolness to deep remembrance of a friend.

中宵劳梦想

中宵即半夜。劳梦想写因思念而心神劳碌，梦中也不得安宁。结尾以夜深难寐、魂梦相牵收束全诗，余味悠长。

Zhongxiao means midnight. Laboring through dreams describes a mind troubled by longing, unable to find peace even in sleep. The ending closes the poem with late-night wakefulness and dream-haunted yearning, leaving a lingering effect.
