War drums are heard, all roads are sealed;
A lonely goose cries in the border field.
From tonight the dew will turn to frost white;
The moon o'er home is brighter to my sight.
My brothers all are scattered far and wide;
Alive or dead, no home can be their guide.
I send them letters that can never go,
And still the war flames on with many a blow.
The war drum is the curfew signal in garrison towns; it cuts off travelers, evoking the tense and desolate atmosphere of war.
The autumn frontier and a lone wild goose's cry create a lonely mood, symbolizing the separation of brothers and the poet's own solitude.
This line references the White Dew solar term and the cold dew of night, reinforcing the chilly, melancholy atmosphere.
The same moon seems brighter over home, a subjective comparison that intensifies homesickness and longing for family.
The poet plainly states that his younger brothers are scattered because of war, which is the direct cause of his memory and worry.
With the home destroyed, there is no place to ask whether his brothers are alive or dead, conveying deep anxiety and grief.
Letters frequently fail to reach their destination, showing how war obstructs all communication.
Moreover, the war has not yet ceased, emphasizing the hopelessness and suffering caused by endless conflict.
This poem was written in autumn 759 during the An Lushan Rebellion. Du Fu, stranded in Qinzhou (present-day Tianshui, Gansu), was separated from his younger brothers. With all communication cut off by war, he composed this eight-line regulated verse to express his deep concern for his family and his lament over the ravages of war.
