The river town looks like a painted scene;
At dusk I gaze upon the sky serene.
Two streams embrace a mirror bright and clear;
Twin bridges fall like rainbows far and near.
Smoke from the houses chills the orange trees;
Autumn has aged the plane trees in the breeze.
Who remembers me on the northern tower high,
Facing the wind, for Xie Gong I sigh.
The river town refers to Xuancheng, named for its waterside setting. Like a painted scene is a simile that gives a panoramic impression of the town's picturesque beauty.
Mountain dusk and gazing at the clear sky indicate the time, place, and viewpoint. The line moves from a general view to the specific act of climbing and looking out.
The two waters are the Wan and Ju streams; bright mirrors is a metaphor for their clear, calm surfaces. The word clasp makes the streams seem to hold a mirror between them.
The twin bridges are Phoenix Bridge and Jichuan Bridge over the Wan Stream; rainbow is a metaphor for their reflections in the water. The word fall captures the dynamic beauty of bridge shadows like rainbows descending.
Smoke from homes refers to village life; chills the orange trees means autumn cold lends a chill to the citrus. The causative use of chill, with synesthetic effect, evokes autumnal desolation.
Autumn colors age the plane trees. The word age is causative, turning intangible autumn into a force that brings aging. Paired with the previous line's chill, it deepens a sense of lateness and decline.
Who remembers is a rhetorical question expressing loneliness and the scarcity of true understanding. The northern tower is Xie Tiao's North Tower, also called Xie Gong Tower, a famous site in Xuancheng.
Facing the wind, standing against the breeze; Xie Gong is Xie Tiao, the Southern Qi poet and former governor of Xuancheng. Li Bai admired him throughout his life. The line turns from scenery to emotion, mingling historical remembrance with personal lament.
This poem was likely written around 753 CE, during Li Bai's travels in Xuancheng. The North Tower there was associated with Xie Tiao, a Southern Qi poet who had served as governor of Xuancheng. Li Bai deeply admired Xie Tiao's fresh and elegant style. Climbing the tower on an autumn day, he saw the town's picturesque rivers and bridges, and the scene stirred both remembrance of Xie Tiao and a hidden lament over his own wandering life and lack of true understanding.
