The New Year comes, yet no fragrant blooms are seen;
In second month I'm startled by grass green.
But snow resents that spring is late to wake;
So through the courtyard trees it flies, for spring's sake.
New Year: the lunar New Year, also early spring. Dou: entirely. Fanghua: fragrant blossoms. The line says spring has arrived but no flowers have bloomed, using negation to create expectation and mild disappointment, preparing for the snow image below.
Second month: the second lunar month, early spring. Chu: just. Jing: surprise and delight. Caoya: newly sprouted grass tips. The word jing captures the poet's sudden joy at discovering spring's presence, turning the mood from disappointment to hope; the grass buds symbolize fragile yet tenacious life.
Que: but, instead. Xian: to dislike or complain. Chunse wan: spring's colors are late. This line uses personification, making white snow a sentient being that complains; the word xian makes the cold snow seem playful and affectionate, while hinting at the poet's eager longing for spring.
Gu: intentionally, therefore. Chuan: to pass through. Tingshu: trees in the courtyard. Zuo: to serve as, to become. Feihua: flying fallen blossoms. The snow deliberately drifts through courtyard trees, pretending to be flying flowers. This is both personification and metaphor; by turning snow into blossoms, the poet compensates for spring's delay with ingenious imagination and optimistic humor.
Han Yu lived in the mid-Tang period. This poem was probably written during the Yuanhe reign of Emperor Xianzong, when Han Yu held office in Chang'an. In an early spring, after the New Year had passed but before flowers bloomed, he saw fresh grass shoots and then a spring snow. He used the snow to express his longing for spring and his delight in its belated signs, employing personification and unexpected imagery characteristic of his inventive style.
