Green hills are faint and far; the river stretches away,
Autumn is over in Jiangnan, yet grass remains green and gay.
On Twenty-Four Bridges in the bright moonlight,
Where, my jade-like friend, are you teaching the flute tonight?
The opening line paints a distant vista: green hills loom faintly and rivers stretch far away. It both sketches the landscape of Jiangnan and hints that the poet is far away, looking toward Yangzhou with longing. The reduplicated words yinyin (faint) and tiaotiao (far-stretching) give the scene a hazy, flowing quality.
This line fixes the season as late autumn, yet the mild climate of Jiangnan keeps the grass from withering. The word 'not yet withered' subtly contrasts the poet's current surroundings and deepens his nostalgic attachment to the South.
The Twenty-Four Bridges are famous landmarks of Yangzhou. One interpretation is that there were twenty-four bridges in the city; another takes it as a single bridge named 'Twenty-Four Bridges.' The bright moonlit night evokes Yangzhou's elegance and lays the groundwork for the playful question that follows.
'Jade-like person' can be a complimentary name for his friend Han Chuo, or it may suggest the singing girls of Yangzhou in the poet's memory. This teasing, intimate question asks where his old friend is enjoying the moon and music, and in so doing expresses nostalgia for their time together in Yangzhou.
Du Mu was good friends with Han Chuo while serving as secretary of the Huainan military governor in Yangzhou. After leaving the city, at the end of autumn in Jiangnan, he missed the southern landscape and his old colleague, so he wrote this quatrain to Han Chuo, playfully asking what elegant pleasures his friend was enjoying in Yangzhou.
