My reclusive mood can never fade away;
I drift along and let the boat choose its own way.
The evening wind blows on my moving boat;
A path of flowers leads to the creek's mouth remote.
As night arrives, I turn toward the western vale;
Across the hills I watch the Southern Dipper pale.
The mist on the pool flies thick and softly white;
The moon among the trees sinks low behind in flight.
Life's affairs are vast and vague, without a shore;
I wish to be an old angler forevermore.
“Reclusive feeling” means the longing for a secluded life; “without break” suggests it flows on unceasingly. The poem opens with inner mood rather than scenery, setting a detached, leisurely tone and preparing for the boat journey to come. A device of starting with emotion before scene.
“This going” refers to the spring boating; “follow whatever it meets” means to drift with chance, letting the boat go where it will. It echoes Zhuangzi’s free wandering, showing a non-attached, spontaneous mind and hinting at an attitude of following fate in life.
It marks evening and introduces motion: the evening wind blows the traveling boat. Wind and boat form a dynamic image, simple yet propelling the scene forward; the “traveling boat” also suggests the poet himself drifting and sightseeing.
It describes where the boat arrives: flowers on both banks form a path, and the boat enters the mouth of Ruoye Creek. “Flower path” is a typical spring image, blending sight and scent; the verb “enters” suggests gradually entering a beautiful realm, with the scenery changing step by step.
“As night arrives” marks the shift to night; “turning toward the western vale” means the boat turns into a western valley. Time moves from dusk to night, and space moves from creek mouth to mountain vale; the structure advances both time and space, making the scene deeper and more secluded.
Across the mountains the poet looks up at the Southern Dipper, an astronomical image on a night voyage. “Across” shows the mountain barrier; “looks” shows gazing into distance. The Southern Dipper adds a sense of profundity and vastness, perhaps also orienting the journey.
It depicts mist on the creek pool flying and spreading like smoke. The reduplicative “溶溶” describes dense, flowing mist and adds musical beauty; using motion to depict stillness, it creates a hazy night atmosphere.
As the boat moves, the moon among the trees hangs low and seems to slip backward. “Low and backward” presents the moon from a moving viewpoint, implying the boat is advancing and the night deepening. With the previous line’s mist and this line’s moon, one flying and one lowering, the images form a nice contrast.
“Life’s affairs” means worldly matters; “vast and vague” originally describes spreading mist, here metaphorically suggests that human affairs are complex, boundless, and hard to grasp. The poem turns from scenery to reflection, using the mist image as a bridge, expressing detachment from worldly concerns.
“Old angler holding a rod” stands for a recluse or fisherman-sage. Alluding to the fisherman archetype, the line directly expresses the wish to retire from the world. Ending with a wish echoes the opening “reclusive feeling,” making the poem complete from beginning to end.
Qi Wuqian was a Tang poet active in the Kaiyuan era, associated with Wang Wei and Meng Haoran. He held office but later withdrew to a reclusive life. Ruoye Creek, in present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang, is a famous scenic spot in Yue, traditionally linked with Xi Shi washing silk. This poem describes a spring night boat trip on the creek: evening wind, entering the creek mouth, turning into a western vale at night, gazing at the Southern Dipper across the hills, mist and moon among trees, and finally the wish to become an old fisherman. It reflects the Tang landscape-pastoral ideal of quietude, spontaneity, and reclusion, likely written around the poet’s disappointment in office or before and after retirement, using the creek journey to express a desire to transcend worldly affairs.
