River rain falls misty, riverside grass in rows;
Six dynasties like dreams, birds cry in vain crows;
Most heartless are the willows by the Terrace Wall;
They still veil the ten-mile levee in smoke and pall.
The poem opens with scenery; the reduplicated word 'feifei' depicts a fine drizzling rain, while the river grass grows in neat rows, creating a misty atmosphere; the repeated character 'river' gives a rippling, lingering effect.
The rise and fall of the Six Dynasties is compared to a dream; the word 'vainly' uses the birdsong to contrast with the emptiness of historical change, conveying nostalgia for the past and lament for the present.
Personification is used: the willows at the Terrace Wall are called heartless because they do not understand dynastic rise and fall and remain lush as ever; 'most of all' intensifies the irony and deepens the lament.
The poem ends with imagery: the hazy willow-smoke still veils the ten-mile levee, echoing the first line to emphasize nature's eternity against the disappearance of the Six Dynasties and, by implication, the crumbling Tang court.
Written after the Huang Chao rebellion in the late Tang dynasty, when Wei Zhuang was taking refuge in the Jiangnan region, this poem mourns the old capital of the Six Dynasties, Jinling (present-day Nanjing). The Terrace Wall was the seat of the Six Dynasties' imperial palaces. Through the dreamlike past of the Six Dynasties, the poet obliquely suggests the decline of the Tang dynasty and expresses a profound feeling of historical vicissitude and turbulent times.
