I love Master Meng, the man so free,
Whose noble grace is known from sea to sea.
In youth he cast aside the cap and car,
In age he lies where pines and clouds are.
Beneath the moon he oft drinks sage's wine,
With flowers charmed, he leaves no king to pine.
How can I reach that mountain's lofty height?
I only bow before his fragrance bright.
The poem opens with direct, heartfelt admiration: 'I love Master Meng.' The term '夫子' is a respectful address, both intimate and reverent, showing Li Bai's frank and sincere manner in poems to friends.
Here '风流' means noble bearing, talent, and reputation, not frivolity. 'Known throughout the world' uses hyperbole to sum up Meng Haoran's extraordinary grace and poetic fame.
'Red face' refers to youth; 'chariots and caps' stand by metonymy for official rank and salary. The word 'cast aside' shows Meng's early rejection of worldly gain, highlighting his detachment through metonymy and contrast.
'White head' contrasts with 'red face' above, telling of his reclusion into old age. 'Lying among pines and clouds' uses pine and cloud imagery to symbolize a pure, serene life of withdrawal. The line parallels the previous one in time and structure.
'中圣' alludes to the Three Kingdoms scholar Xu Miao's euphemism for being drunk; 'often' shows how frequently he drank. 'Drunk with the moon' joins wine and moonlight, expressing Meng's refined, poetic pleasures.
'Charmed by flowers' describes his immersion in natural beauty; 'not serving the ruler' means he would not take office. Parallel to the previous line, the flower and moon imagery shapes Meng as a recluse devoted to landscape and free of political ambition.
This echoes the Book of Songs line 'the high mountain I look up to,' using the mountain as a metaphor for Meng's lofty character and art. 'How can one look up to it?' seems to say it is unreachable, but the rhetorical question is actually the highest praise.
'揖' is a respectful bow with hands clasped; 'clear fragrance' literally means fresh scent, metaphorically denoting noble character. 'Only here' suggests the poet can do no more than bow, closing the poem with sincere admiration.
Li Bai and Meng Haoran were close friends, and this poem directly expresses Li Bai's admiration for him. Meng Haoran spent most of his life in reclusion rather than office, and his poetry and character were known for their fresh simplicity and detachment. Li Bai praises his wide fame as 'known throughout the world' and uses the image of a high mountain to suggest his unreachable nobility. The poem was likely written when Li Bai visited Meng Haoran in Xiangyang, and its frank, spirited language typifies Li Bai's poems to friends.
