The Long River grieves, its current choked and slow;
Ten thousand miles from home, my thoughts still homeward go.
How much more now, when autumn winds blow late and high,
From hill to hill the yellow leaves go drifting by.
Long River: the Yangtze, or the river before the poet’s eyes. Bei (悲): personification—the river is made to grieve; more precisely, the poet projects his own sorrow onto the landscape. Yi zhi (已滞): already stalled or slowed. Literally the current seems blocked; symbolically the speaker is detained far from home, his return thwarted. The opening fuses scene and emotion and establishes a low, pent-up mood.
Wan li (万里): ten thousand li, hyperbole for extreme distance from home. Nian (念): to long for, to think of. Jiang gui (将归): to wish or intend to return. This line speaks directly from the heart. The tension between the vast spatial distance and the inward orientation toward home makes the body unable to return while the heart has already gone. It contrasts with the stalled river in line 1: outer scene versus inner feeling.
Kuang (况): moreover, how much more—a marker of escalation. Shu (属): to coincide with, to be in. Gao feng (高风): autumn wind; in classical poetry it often denotes the strong winds of autumn, not noble character. Wan (晚): late—both late autumn and late day, giving a double sense of time. The line turns from emotion back to scene; the late high wind intensifies bleakness and prepares for the closing image.
Shan shan (山山): mountain upon mountain, every mountain; reduplication creates an effect of endless, layered barriers. Huang ye (黄叶): yellow leaves of autumn, symbols of decay, drifting, and late season. Fei (飞): to fly, scatter—a dynamic image that closes the poem. The ending is purely scenic, yet laden with feeling: yellow leaves swirling over all the hills mirror the poet’s rootless homesickness and unsettled life. The overlapping mountains also suggest the blocked road home, leaving a lingering aftertone.
Wang Bo, one of the Four Talents of the Early Tang, was renowned for precocious genius but died young. This poem was likely written while he was traveling or serving in the Bashu region (present-day Sichuan), far from his home in Longmen, Jiangzhou (modern Hejin, Shanxi). Frustrated in his official career and stranded in a distant land, he wrote this brief homesickness lyric in response to the Yangtze, autumn wind, and falling leaves. In only twenty characters, four layered images—the stalled river, the heart’s ten-thousand-li return, the late high wind, and yellow leaves flying over all the hills—intensify one another and express a deep traveler’s nostalgia.
