Where Chu's frontier meets Three Xiang streams,
Through Jingmen Pass nine rivers gleam.
The river runs past earth and sky,
The hills in mist now lost, now nigh.
The towns seem floating on the shore,
The waves shake distant sky once more.
In Xiangyang sun and breeze are fine,
I'll stay and drink with mountain sage and wine.
“Chu frontier” refers to the borderlands of ancient Chu; “Three Xiang” denotes the Xiang River region in Hunan. The opening line maps the Han River onto a vast geography, linking Chu with the Three Xiang, creating a panoramic spatial scope.
“Jingmen” is a mountain in modern Hubei; “nine tributaries” means many branches of the Yangtze. Parallel to the previous line, it shows the Han River flowing through Jingmen and joining many waterways, conveying grandeur.
“The river runs beyond sky and earth” uses hyperbole and imagination to stress the vast, endless flow of the Han River.
“The hills in mist now lost, now nigh” captures distant mountains appearing and disappearing in mist. The paired concepts of presence and absence create a hazy, ethereal mood; a celebrated line.
“Towns seem floating on the shore.” The towns along the river, reflected in water, appear to float. The static becomes dynamic, showing an optical illusion created by reflection.
“The waves shake distant sky” uses exaggeration: waves seem to stir the far-off sky, merging water and sky and enhancing the majestic motion.
“Xiangyang” is modern Xiangyang, Hubei, on the Han River; “wind and sun” means fine weather and scenery. The line directly praises the pleasant landscape, preparing for the closing sentiment.
“Mountain sage” alludes to Shan Jian of the Jin dynasty, who governed Xiangyang and loved drinking and enjoying scenery. By invoking him, the poet expresses his wish to linger, drink, and share the leisurely joy of the landscape.
The poem was likely written around 740, when Wang Wei, as a censor, was traveling south to supervise selections and passed through Xiangyang. Boating on the Han River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze, he composed this five-character regulated verse. It depicts the river's vastness and the surrounding scenery, while expressing his affection for Xiangyang's landscape and a leisurely, reclusive mood.
