The lofty tower of Prince Teng stands by the river shore,
Its jade and phoenix bells have ceased their song and dance of yore.
At dawn the painted beams fly with South Bank clouds above,
At dusk the pearly curtain rolls up West Mountain rain thereof.
By pool the idle clouds and shadows drift through days so slow;
Things change, stars shift—how many autumns come and go?
Where is the prince who dwelt within this tower today?
Beyond the rails the long river flows in vain away.
The opening names the place and building: Prince Teng's lofty pavilion overlooks the river islet. The broad waterside setting creates a spacious scene and foreshadows the contrast between past glory and present desolation.
Jade pendants and phoenix bells stand for the noble retinues and carriages of old; "ceased" marks a sudden turn, showing past revelry is gone. Sound imagery turns into silence, sharpening past-present contrast.
Painted beams are the richly decorated roof beams; "South Bank" echoes the classical motif of farewell. Morning clouds seem to fly around the beams, animating the still pavilion.
Pearly curtain is a bead-decorated blind; West Mountain is near Nanchang. At dusk the curtain is rolled up as rain comes from the mountain. Parallel with previous line: dawn/dusk, cloud/rain, height and mist.
Idle clouds and pool reflections; "slow/vast" describes both long passing time and a vacant mood. The scene shifts toward emotion and the passage of time.
Things change and stars shift means seasons and time move on; "how many autumns" uses autumn for years, deepening the sense of vicissitude.
"Prince" refers to Li Yuanying, Prince Teng. The rhetorical question asks where the tower's builder is now, turning from scene to human fate and lamenting impermanence.
"Rail" is the balustrade; "flows in vain" means the long river still runs on, indifferent to human rise and fall. Ending with scenery leaves lingering sorrow, akin to Li Bai's "only the long river flows to the horizon."
The poem is traditionally dated to 675 or 676, when Wang Bo was traveling south to Jiaozhi to visit his father. Passing through Hongzhou (modern Nanchang), he attended a banquet held by Governor Yan Boyu to celebrate the rebuilding of Prince Teng's Pavilion. He composed "Prefaces to the Pavilion of Prince Teng" and appended this poem, moving from past glory to present emptiness and expressing vicissitude and the passage of time.
