Her silken skirt and lotus leaves share one green dye;
Lotus blossoms part on both cheeks as she paddles by.
She slips among the pool's flowers, lost to the eye;
Only when her song is heard do we know she's nigh.
Lotus leaves and her silk skirt seem cut from the same green. The line uses metaphor and imagination to show the girl blending perfectly into her natural surroundings.
Lotus blooms open on either side facing her face. The flowers set off the girl's beauty, creating a mirroring effect between the human face and the blossoms.
She merges into the lotus pond and can no longer be seen. This visual vanishing prepares for the auditory revelation in the next line.
Only upon hearing her song does one realize someone is approaching. Sound reveals what sight cannot, an indirect and lively ending that leaves a lingering charm.
Wang Changling's 'Song of Picking Lotus, Two Poems' was likely written during the Kaiyuan era of Emperor Xuanzong, perhaps while he served in Jiangning or traveled in Jiangnan and observed lotus picking in the watery region. The second poem depicts a lotus-picking girl blending into the lotus pond, celebrating Jiangnan's waterside life and natural beauty while showing the poet's absorption of folk-song style.
