The mountain temple towers a hundred feet high;
I reach and pluck the stars from the sky.
I dare not speak in a voice too loud,
Lest I should startle the heavenly crowd.
Wei lou means a high tower or temple building; here it is the lofty pavilion of a mountain temple. Bai chi is a hyperbolic figure, meaning a hundred feet, used to stress extreme height rather than an exact measurement. The opening line looks upward and establishes the poem's wondrous, towering perspective.
Xing chen means stars; zhai means to pluck or pick. Building on the previous line, this uses hyperbole and fantasy to suggest the tower is so high that the stars seem within arm's reach. The static height becomes a dynamic action, full of romantic imagination and childlike wonder.
Gao sheng yu means to speak loudly; bu gan means dare not. This line turns from scenery to inner feeling: the poet is overawed by the height near heaven and also instinctively lowers his voice in the quiet mountain temple at night. The shift is understated yet evocative.
Kong means lest or for fear that; jing means to startle or disturb; tian shang ren means people in heaven, imagined as immortals or celestial beings. By using an imaginary realm to reflect reality, the line further emphasizes the height of the temple and reveals Li Bai's romantic, playful imagination.
Traditionally attributed to Li Bai, this poem is said to have been written when he lodged overnight in a mountain temple during his travels. Climbing the towering temple tower and looking up at the stars, he felt so close to the sky that he wrote these lines, using hyperbole and imagination to convey the height of the mountain temple, the wonder of the night, and a reverent, romantic awe.
