In Yan the grass is like green silk thread;
In Qin the mulberries droop low their head.
When you, my lord, long for home and sigh,
It is the time this wife's heart must die.
Spring wind, to me you are unknown;
Why through my silken curtain have you blown?
Yan: the northern frontier (modern Hebei/Liaoning), where the husband is stationed. 'Green silk' is a metaphor for tender spring grass. The line evokes distance and separation through regional imagery.
Qin: the Guanzhong/Chang'an region, home of the wife. The mulberry branches bend with lush green leaves. The contrast with Yan grass highlights the distance and different climates of the two locales.
Dang: when. Jun: respectful address for the husband. 'Huai gui' means longing to return home. The line shifts to the husband's perspective, imagining his homesickness.
Qie: humble self-reference used by women. 'Duan chang' (broken intestines) is a conventional metaphor for extreme grief. The line completes the mutual longing: when he thinks of returning, she is already heartbroken.
Personification and apostrophe: the spring wind is addressed as an uninvited stranger. Though naturally emotionless, it stirs the wife's longing, hence 'we are strangers.'
He shi: for what reason. Luo wei: silk bed-curtain. The rhetorical question closes the poem; outwardly she scolds the wind for entering her chamber, but inwardly it reveals her loneliness and fidelity.
Li Bai's 'Spring Thoughts' was likely composed in the High Tang period, though the exact date is unknown. With frequent frontier wars in the Tang, soldiers were stationed far away and their wives often remained alone, giving rise to many poems on boudoir grief and frontier longing. The poem depicts a woman in Qin longing for her husband in Yan. It opens with spring scenery in the two regions, uses differences in climate to suggest spatial separation, then moves from his homesickness to her heartbreak, and ends by scolding the spring wind for entering her bed-curtain. The ending subtly reveals her deep affection and chastity. The style is fresh and delicate, influenced by Southern Dynasties yuefu and the 'Nineteen Old Poems.'
