In the hills I have seen you off, my friend;
At dusk I shut the brushwood gate again.
Next year the spring grass will be green once more;
Will you come back, my friend, or not—oh, when?
"In the mountains" sets a secluded scene; "seeing you off is over" indicates the farewell has ended. The poet omits the farewell itself and writes only the aftermath, using "over" to evoke emptiness and quiet loss.
"At dusk" marks the time and deepens the sorrow of parting; "closing the brushwood gate" is a homely action. The rustic gate suggests simple mountain life. The shutting of the door implies solitude and lingering thought—emotion fused with scene.
"Next year the spring grass will be green" turns from present parting to future imagining. It alludes to the Chu Ci poem "Summoning the Recluse": "The spring grass grows so luxuriantly." The natural cycle of grass greening again contrasts with the uncertainty of human reunion and prepares for the final question.
"Wangsun" originally means a noble's descendant and alludes to the Chu Ci "Summoning the Recluse"; here it refers to the friend. "Will you return or not?" ends with a question left unanswered, creating endless suspense and expressing the poet's longing for reunion in a subtle, lingering way.
This poem was likely written during Wang Wei's reclusion at Wangchuan. In his middle and later years, Wang Wei was devoted to Buddhism and lived a semi-official, semi-reclusive life at his Wangchuan villa in Lantian, where he socialized and exchanged poems with friends. The poem describes the loneliness after seeing a guest off in the mountains and closing the gate at dusk. Borrowing the traditional images of spring grass and "wangsun" (the departing friend or noble youth), it expresses earnest hope for the friend's return and melancholy over the uncertainty of partings and reunions. It avoids the farewell scene itself, focusing instead on a moment after parting and a conjecture about next year, with plain language and deep feeling.
