春城无处不飞花
寒食东风御柳斜
日暮汉宫传蜡烛
轻烟散入五侯家
In spring city, petals fly everywhere;
Cold Food day, willows slant in east wind air.
At dusk, Han palace candles are given with care;
Light smoke enters five nobles' mansions where.

春城无处不飞花

寒食东风御柳斜
寒食是清明前一二日，古时禁火；御柳指皇家园林中的柳树。东风吹拂，御柳斜斜，暗写寒食时节的京城风物。
Cold Food Day is one or two days before Qingming, when fires were traditionally forbidden; 'imperial willows' are willows in the imperial gardens. The east wind blows and the willows slant, depicting the seasonal scenery of the capital.
日暮汉宫传蜡烛
汉宫实指唐代皇宫，用汉朝代指本朝是唐诗常用手法。寒食禁火，但皇帝在傍晚向近臣赏赐蜡烛，'传'字写出递次传送的情景。
The 'Han palace' actually refers to the Tang palace; using Han to stand for the current dynasty is a common device in Tang poetry. Fire was prohibited on Cold Food Day, but the emperor granted candles to favored courtiers at dusk; the word 'passed' conveys the sequence of transmission.
轻烟散入五侯家
五侯原指东汉梁冀一族五侯，后世泛指权贵之家。蜡烛的轻烟飘入五侯家，暗讽皇帝宠幸外戚和权臣，令其享有特权。
The 'five marquises' originally referred to the five noble lords of the Liang family in the Eastern Han, but later became a general term for powerful aristocratic families.
