白发三千丈
缘愁似个长
不知明镜里
何处得秋霜
My white hair stretches three thousand feet, —
For my grief is as long, indeed.
I cannot know within my mirror bright, —
From where the autumn frost comes at night.
逐句注释
白发三千丈
起笔奇崛，以夸张手法写白发之长。现实中不可能有三千丈白发，正是以不可能之语极言愁苦之深重。白发因愁而生，愁有多深，白发便有多长。
The opening is striking, using hyperbole to describe the length of white hair. Three thousand zhang of white hair is impossible in reality; this impossible image serves to exaggerate the overwhelming depth of sorrow. White hair grows because of worry — as deep as the worry, as long the hair.
缘愁似个长
补足前句之意，点明因果关系。‘缘’为因为，‘似个’是如此。愁绪绵延不绝，故白发也长得超出常理。一个‘愁’字正是全诗的诗眼，将有形之发与无形之愁贯通起来。
This line completes the previous thought by revealing the cause. '缘' means because and '似个' means like this. Since his grief is endless, his white hair grows beyond reason. The word '愁' (sorrow) is the poem's eye, linking visible hair to invisible grief.
不知明镜里
镜头一转，由想象中的惊人白发回到现实场景。‘不知’二字故作惊讶，仿佛并未料想镜中已是满头霜雪，写出诗人对年华老去的突兀感与无奈自嘲。
The perspective shifts from the imaginary astonishing hair to a real scene. The phrase '不知' (I don't know) feigns surprise, as if he had not expected to see a head full of snow in the mirror, capturing the abrupt shock of aging and helpless self-mockery.
何处得秋霜
以‘秋霜’喻白发，既见颜色之白，又暗含秋日肃杀、万物凋零之意，暗示岁月无情。末句以反问收束，不答而答，将满腔哀愁尽付不言之中。
'Autumn frost' is a metaphor for white hair, capturing both the whiteness of color and the killing, withering quality of autumn, implying the ruthlessness of time. The poem ends with a rhetorical question that leaves the answer unsaid, letting all the sorrow speak through silence.
