A man—why not take up the Wu hook bright,
And win back the fifty states by right?
Pray climb with me the Lingyan Hall of fame,
Which scholar there has won a marquis' name?
A true man—why not take up the Wu hook? The rhetorical question gives an impassioned opening. The Wu hook is a curved blade from the Wu region, later a general symbol of weapons and military valor, expressing the desire to take up arms and serve the state.
Recover the lost lands and fifty provinces. Guan shan, passes and mountains, stands for the realm; fifty provinces is a hyperbolic and representative figure for territories held by regional military governors. The line expresses the grand ambition to reclaim lost land and restore unity.
Please ascend for a moment the Lingyan Pavilion. The pavilion was where Emperor Taizong of Tang had portraits of twenty-four founding ministers painted; it became a symbol of supreme merit and lasting historical fame. The line turns from personal feeling to exhortation through historical allusion.
Which scholar has become a marquis of ten thousand households? The closing rhetorical question is not a simple contempt for learning but an outburst of frustration that men of letters rarely win great office or glory. It sets off the poet's resolve to abandon the desk for the sword.
This is the fifth poem in Li He's South Garden series. South Garden was the poet's home in Changgu, modern Yiyang, Henan; the group reflects country life, reading, and personal frustration. In the mid-Tang, regional military governors divided the empire and national power declined. Li He was brilliant but was barred from the imperial examination because of a naming taboo involving his father's name, so his official career was blocked and he held only low posts. The poem expresses his longing to join the army, recover lost territory, and win glory, together with a scholar's frustration at unfulfilled ambition.
