Love not your brocade robe of golden thread,
But love your youth while youth is yet ahead.
When flowers bloom and can be plucked, go pluck them now;
Wait not until no bloom is left upon the bough.
The poem begins with a warning: do not cherish the gold-embroidered robe, a symbol of wealth and vanity. This is a rhetorical device of contrast, setting material luxury against what is truly worth treasuring.
The second line completes the parallel, urging one to value the time of youth. The repetition of '劝君' gives an earnest, persuasive tone; youth is contrasted with the golden robe, emphasizing intangible time over material wealth.
This line uses a metaphor: blooming flowers stand for youth, and plucking them stands for seizing opportunities or savoring present joy. The words '堪折' and '直须' convey urgency and decisiveness to act while the chance lasts.
The final line offers the opposite side: when the flowers have fallen, you can only hold an empty branch—a vivid image of regret. The word '空' stresses emptiness, warning that lost youth and neglected opportunities can never be retrieved.

This poem, also known as 'Miscellaneous Poem' by some manuscripts, was a popular Yuefu song in the Tang dynasty. It is traditionally attributed to Du Qiuniang, a woman of Jinling (now Nanjing) and a concubine of military governor Li Qi. The work admonishes people not to cling to material splendor but to value the brief time of youth and act decisively in the present. Its simple metaphor and contrasting imagery have made it one of the most widely remembered Tang poems.
