Beyond the ridge, all tidings from home are gone,
Through winter and spring, the years have run on.
Nearing home, my timid heart grows shy;

岭外音书断
岭外指岭南五岭以南的边远之地，作者被贬在此。音书断：与家中书信、消息完全断绝。此句写出贬谪远方、音讯隔绝的孤苦处境，为下文的“近乡情怯”作铺垫。
Lingwai refers to the remote region south of the Five Ridges, where the poet was exiled. Yinshu duan means all letters and news from home had been cut off. This line establishes the isolation and suffering that led to his later anxiety near home.
经冬复历春
经历了冬天，又熬过了春天，说明时间已超过一年。“复”字强调时间的漫长，透露出诗人在贬所度日如年、极度思念家乡的心情。
This means he went through winter and then spring again—more than a full year. The word fu (again) stresses how long and painful the separation was, sharpening his longing for home.
近乡情更怯
越走近家乡，心里反而越发害怕。按常理，离乡越近应越高兴，但因长久没有家书，诗人担心家中可能遭遇变故，所以由期盼转为恐惧。“更”字写出心情随着距离缩短而不断加剧的矛盾。
The closer he gets to home, the more afraid he becomes. Normally one would grow joyful as home draws near, but because he has received no news for so long, he dreads that disaster may have struck his family. The word geng (even more) captures the intensifying inner conflict.
不敢问来人
见到迎面来的人，本可打听家中消息，却因害怕得到坏消息而不敢开口。这一反常行为含蓄深刻地表现了诗人既想知情又胆怯退缩的复杂心理。
Seeing a traveler coming from his hometown, he might ask for family news, but he dares not, fearing the worst. This illogical yet deeply human reaction subtly conveys his terror and hesitation before the possibility of bad news.

宋之问因依附武则天的宠臣张易之，唐中宗复位后被贬为泷州参军。他从贬所（今广东罗定一带）冒险偷偷逃回家乡，途经汉水时写下这首诗。诗题“渡汉江”即由此而来。诗中通过描写东归途中既深切想家又不敢打听家书的心情，真实展现了贬谪之人的焦虑与恐惧。
Song Zhiwen was exiled to Longzhou (near today's Luoding, Guangdong) because he had attached himself to Zhang Yizhi, a favorite of Empress Wu Zetian. After Emperor Zhongzong resumed the throne, Song was demoted and banished. He secretly escaped from his place of exile and journeyed back home, writing this poem while crossing the Han River. It captures the fugitive's poignant state of mind—longing for home yet afraid to ask for news, for fear of learning that some misfortune had befallen his family.
