In Brocade City, music from strings and flutes pours forth each day,
Half melting into river breeze, half soaring in the clouds away.
Such melody could only come from Heaven's jade palace halls,
How many times can human ears catch these celestial calls?
‘Brocade City’ refers to Chengdu; ‘strings and pipes’ symbolize music. ‘In a riot’ conveys the rich, bustling sound and grand scale of the performance.
Half of the melody floats into the river wind, half rises into the clouds. This parallel line depicts the music as ethereal, pervasive, and deeply moving.
Only heaven could possess such music—an exaggeration that praises the tune as celestial, suggesting it surpasses the ordinary human world.
How often can mortals hear such a melody? A rhetorical question deepens the praise and conveys a sense of rarity, wonder, and fleeting beauty.
Written around 761 AD under Emperor Suzong, this poem was composed at a banquet in the house of Hua Jingding (General Hua), a victorious but arrogant officer in Chengdu. Du Fu lavishes praise on the extraordinary music while subtly criticizing Hua for using imperial ceremonial music beyond his rank—a blend of eulogy and satire veiled in exquisite language.
