Between the willows green the river flows along;
My gallant in a boat is heard to sing a song.
The west is veiled in rain, the east enjoys sunshine;
My gallant is as deep in love as the day is fine.
The opening line uses the xing technique, setting a bright spring scene of green willows and calm, level river water. This peaceful atmosphere anticipates the lover’s song, while the word ping suggests both the smooth river and the girl’s quietly expectant mood.
The perspective shifts from seeing to hearing. The word wen introduces the beloved’s singing, which stirs her heart. The singing voice also foreshadows the pun on qing/affection and qing/fair weather in the final line.
The simultaneous sunlight and rain seem to be objective description but metaphorically suggest the lover’s ambivalent attitude—sometimes warm, sometimes remote. It is a characteristic bixing analogy drawn from folk song.
This is the pivotal line. Qing/sunny is a pun for qing/love. On the surface, the weather cannot be called sunny all over, yet there is sunshine; beneath the surface, the beloved seems indifferent, yet his singing suggests affection. The weather metaphor captures her mingled doubt and joy.
This poem was written around 822–824 during the Changqing era of Emperor Muzong, when Liu Yuxi served as governor of Kuizhou along the Yangtze, a region where local Ba-Chu folk songs known as bamboo branch songs flourished. Drawing upon folk traditions during his banishment in the southwest, Liu transformed these village tunes into refined literati quatrains. The poem depicts a young woman on the riverbank stirred by her lover's song, using the region’s changeable summer weather to express the delicate feeling of love that seems absent yet is truly present.
