Jade dew has chilled and wounded maple woods with red;
Wu's peaks and gorges breathe a bleak and somber dread.
Between the river's waves, up to the sky they roar;
On frontier passes, clouds touch earth with gloom once more.
Twice chrysanthemums bloomed—tears for the days of yore;
My lonely boat moored fast—my heart seeks home's dear door.
For winter clothes, scissors and rules are urged all round;
From high White Emperor's walls, dusk pounding shakes the ground.
"Jade dew" means autumn dew, clear as jade, marking late autumn. "Wound and wither" is causative: the dew damages the maple woods. The red maple leaves are chilled and faded, carrying a bleak autumnal mood. This line sets the poem's desolate tone and alludes to the Chinese literary tradition of autumn lament, especially Song Yu's "Nine Declarations."
Wu Mountains and Wu Gorges refer to the landscape around Kuizhou; "somber and dense" describes the bleak, forbidding atmosphere. The repetition of "Wu" intensifies the sense of place and vastness. The view expands from the maple woods to the Three Gorges, using scenery to convey the poet's displacement in Kuizhou and his anxiety for family and country.
"Between the river" refers to the Yangtze in the Three Gorges; "linking with heaven" means the waves surge up to the sky. This is hyperbole: the turbulent autumn river mirrors political upheaval and inner unrest. The movement rises from river to sky, grand and forceful.
"On the frontier" refers to the passes around Kuizhou; wind and clouds hang low and touch the earth with gloom. This line parallels the previous one: sky-surge versus earth-gloom, enclosing the world in turbulence. It symbolizes the darkness of war and the peril of the state. Scenery contains emotion, characteristic of Du Fu's grave and resonant style.
Chrysanthemums have bloomed twice, meaning the poet has spent two autumns in Kuizhou. "Tears of other days" recalls past sorrow, or tears once shed now flowing again. The flowers return unchanged while human affairs have altered; a seasonal sight evokes grief, deepening homesickness and national sorrow.
A lonely boat lies moored; the heart is tied to the old garden. The word "tied/moored" works doubly: the boat is physically bound, while the heart is emotionally bound to home. The lonely boat symbolizes rootlessness; "old garden" means the homeland, expressing deep homesickness.
Winter clothes are being prepared everywhere; scissors and measuring rules are urged. The scene widens from personal sorrow to common people making winter garments. It reflects wartime hardship and contrasts with the poet's homelessness and isolation.
White Emperor City stands high to the east of Kuizhou; at dusk the pounding of washing blocks quickens. Pounding blocks were used to soften cloth for winter garments. This sound echoes the previous line and closes the poem with auditory imagery, heightening autumn grief, patriotism, and homesickness.
"Autumn Meditations" is a set of eight seven-character regulated verses written by Du Fu in Kuizhou in the autumn of 766. After the An Lushan Rebellion, Du Fu wandered in the southwest and stayed in Kuizhou. The Tang dynasty was declining amid warlord separatism and frontier troubles, while the poet was old, sick, and homesick. The autumn scenery of Wu Mountains and Wu Gorges stirred deep reflections on national decline and personal displacement, producing this famous sequence. This first poem begins with Kuizhou's autumn landscape and fuses grief for the nation with sorrow for his own life.
