The seven stars of the Northern Dipper blaze on high;
At night Lord Geshu rides with his sword by his side.
Even now, would-be raiders probe where the war-horses graze;
They dare not cross the border at Lintao's ways.
Opens with the image of the Northern Dipper high in the sky. This is a xing or evocative opening: the vast frontier night and the high stars suggest order and guardianship, preparing the way for praising Geshu Han's martial authority.
Geshu refers to the Tang general Geshu Han. The phrase carries a sword at night sketches him in the sparest terms as a vigilant, formidable frontier commander patrolling and staying ready for battle.
The phrase even now extends the praise from one moment to lasting effect. Peering at grazing horses suggests enemies probing the border under the pretext of pasturage; their furtive spying highlights the deterrent power of the Tang frontier forces.
Lintao was a strategic frontier stronghold in the northwest. The line says the enemy dares not cross it, directly expressing their fear. The closing uses hyperbole and contrast to emphasize Geshu Han's power in guarding the border.
Geshu Song is a frontier folk song from the Tang dynasty, attributed to a person of the western borderlands, literally a western frontier person. It praises the reputation of Geshu Han, a famous general under Emperor Xuanzong, who defended the Hexi and Longyou regions against Tibetan incursions. The poem's plain, vigorous language and frontier images, such as the Northern Dipper, the night sword, grazing horses, and Lintao, create the portrait of a commander whose mere authority keeps invaders from crossing the border. It also reflects the frontier people's longing for capable generals and a secure life.
