Clouds recall her dress, flowers recall her face;
Spring breeze touches the rail, where dew gleams full of grace.
If not seen atop the Jade Mountain's fairy height,
She must be met beneath the moon on Yao Terrace bright.
The line uses clouds and flowers as metaphors for Yang Guifei's dress and face. The word xiang can mean both resembles and reminds one of: seeing clouds, one thinks of her garments; seeing flowers, one thinks of her face.
The spring breeze brushes the railing, and the dew-covered peonies are richly colored. The line describes the spring scene by the Chenxiang Pavilion and subtly suggests the imperial favor shining upon the beauty, like flowers moistened by dew.
Qunyu Mountain is a mythical mountain where Xi Wangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, was said to dwell, rich in jade. The line uses the fairy realm to heighten her beauty: if she were not seen on Qunyu Mountain, she would have to be encountered elsewhere among the immortals.
Yao Terrace is likewise a dwelling of immortals in myth, often linked with the moon and fine jade. Continuing the previous line, it says that if she is not a fairy of Qunyu Mountain, she should be met beneath the moon on Yao Terrace. The couplet turns the human beauty into an immortal vision of luminous, ethereal grace.
This poem was written during the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong's reign. According to legend, while Xuanzong and Yang Guifei were viewing peonies at the Chenxiang Pavilion, the emperor found the old song lyrics unsatisfactory and summoned Li Bai to compose new ones. Li Bai, reportedly drunk, wrote the three Qingping Diao poems on command; this is the first. Through a series of sumptuous images—clouds, flowers, spring breeze, dew, Qunyu Mountain, and Yao Terrace—it praises Yang Guifei's beauty and bearing, blending human loveliness with fairy legend. It is both a song in praise of a beauty and a reflection of the splendor of the high Tang court.
