At dawn I enter the old temple ground,
The early sun climbs the trees around.
A winding path leads to a quiet place,
Deep amidst flowers, a monk's resting space.
The mountain light makes the birds' hearts gay,
The pool's shadow empties my mind away.
All other sounds are hushed and still,
Only the bell and chime ring over the hill.
The opening line sets the time and place; the early morning creates a fresh and tranquil mood, establishing the poem's serene and ethereal tone.
The rising sun shines over the tall woods, with dappled light and shadow hinting at the dawning of Buddhist illumination and Zen, while also depicting the beauty of a forest at daybreak.
The 'winding path' is both literal and metaphorical, symbolizing the tortuous journey toward enlightenment; the 'quiet place' suggests a deep, secluded spot filled with Zen charm.
The meditation room is hidden among dense flowers and trees, emphasizing the temple's deep seclusion from the noisy world and implying that Zen truth lies hidden within.
The word '悦' is used as a causative verb—mountain light delights the birds' innate nature. The personifying touch illustrates the harmonious coexistence of all beings in nature, rich in Zen flavor.
The reflection in the pool empties the human mind of worldly concerns. The character '空' is a pun, describing both the clear emptiness of the water and the emptying of mundane worries, embodying Zen's wisdom of emptiness.
Every sound falls into total silence here. The contrast between 'all sounds' and 'stillness' shifts from motion to stillness, creating a profoundly quiet and ethereal atmosphere.
Only the lingering tone of the bell and stone chime remains. Sound is used to heighten the silence, making the temple seem even more secluded; the bell and chime, as Buddhist instruments, symbolize the enduring echo of the Dharma and everlasting Zen.
This poem was written by Chang Jian while visiting Poshan Temple (now Xingfu Temple) in Changshu, Jiangsu. At dawn, the poet entered the ancient temple, followed a winding path past the Zen room, and beheld the mountain light and pool reflection. In the utter stillness, only the bell and chime resounded, filling him with spiritual clarity and Zen insight. Written in a plain and natural style with an ethereal, far-reaching mood, it is a celebrated landscape poem of the High Tang, revealing the poet's transcendence and longing for tranquility.
