In April, all the earthly blooms have passed away;
The peach blossoms in this mountain temple just display.
Long had I grieved that spring, once gone, could not be found—
Now I see she’s turned to these temple grounds to stay.
The word 'human world' contrasts with 'mountain temple' later; 'April' sets the seasonal context, while 'all flowers have faded' depicts the scene of withering blooms, hinting at the regret of spring's passing.
Because the mountain temple is at a higher altitude with cooler temperatures, the peach blossoms are just now in full bloom; 'just bloom' sharply contrasts with the previous line's 'faded', creating a sense of unexpected delight.
The phrase 'long had I grieved' uses personification to express the poet's frequent regret that spring vanishes without a trace; 'could not be found' emphasizes the frustration of searching in vain.
The word 'turned' personifies spring, suggesting it has moved from the lowlands into the mountain temple; 'did not know' marks a turn, conveying the joy and philosophical insight of discovering spring's hiding place.
This poem was written in the early summer of 817 AD during the reign of Emperor Xianzong in the Tang Dynasty. At the time, Bai Juyi was serving as a military advisor in Jiangzhou. While visiting the Daling Temple atop Xianglu Peak in Mount Lu, he found that although spring had ended and flowers had decayed in the lowlands, peach blossoms at the mountain temple were just beginning to bloom. Moved by the contrast, he composed this short seven-character quatrain full of philosophical insight. The poem originally bore a preface, but it has often been recited independently.
