Deep passion seems like passionless coldness when we part,
Before the wine cup I can find no smile at heart.
The candle has a wick-heart and grieves our parting plight,
And sheds its tears for us until the morning light.
The poem opens with a paradox: a person of deep feeling may appear utterly unfeeling at parting. The contrast between 'deep passion' and 'passionless' captures the numbness and emotional paralysis that overwhelming sorrow can produce.
'Zun' means a wine cup; 'before the cup' sets the scene of a farewell banquet. The poet can only feel that he cannot manage a smile, and this inability to laugh subtly reveals inner anguish.
This line uses personification and a pun. The candle's 'heart' is literally its wick, but it also suggests a human heart. The candle seems to feel sorrow at parting; if an object grieves so, human sorrow must be even deeper.
The personification continues: wax dripping from the burning candle is imagined as tears shed on behalf of the parting couple until dawn. 'Tears' are both wax tears and human tears, blending object and feeling and heightening the sleepless, reluctant sorrow of farewell.
This is the second of Du Mu's two 'Parting Gifts.' In 835, Du Mu left Yangzhou for Chang'an after being promoted from secretary under the Huainan military governor to censor, and he wrote these poems for a singer he was leaving behind. Rather than describing her appearance, the poem focuses on the deep, wordless sorrow of parting, the inability to smile at the farewell banquet, and the personified candle weeping until dawn.
